DOT
MEDICAL

Examination

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is a physical exam that is required of people who drive commercial vehicles. The point of a DOT physical is to make sure that people who are driving commercial motor vehicles are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires them for the safety of the public.

Who needs DOT Physical Examination?

A. Class A Truck Drivers

B. Class B License Drivers

C. Ambulance Drivers

D. Driving Instructors

What Will The DOT Physical Cover?

You will be asked about your medical/health history, including whether you've had the following:

  • Loss of hearing

  • Digestive problems

  • Psychiatric disorders

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Alcohol/Drug Use

  • Missing limbs

  • Spinal cord injuries

  • Impaired vision

  • Kidney disease

  • Stroke

  • Chronic pain

  • Paralysis

  • Brain injuries or neurological disorders, Epilepsy or seizures

  • Heart attack or heart disease

  • Respiratory (breathing) Conditions

What Does The DOT Physical Exam Process Include?

The physical exam itself will consist of:

  • Vision Test:

Your eyes will be tested, both separately and together, using a standard Snellen eye chart.

  • Hearing Test:

Your ability to hear, or not hear, sounds and tones at specific distances and frequencies will be tested and evaluated.

  • Blood Pressure/Pulse Rate:

Your blood pressure and pulse rate will be taken, abnormally high readings/hypertension may result in a shorter medical certification.

  • Urinalysis/Drug Test:

Your urine sample will be tested in a lab for blood, sugar, and protein, which might indicate hidden health problems. It will also be tested for illegal/prescription drugs and alcohol

Is there anything I can do to help make sure my blood pressure isn’t too high?

Make sure you don’t drink caffeine the day of your test.  Avoid stress the day before and morning of the exam. These are a couple of things that may artificially raise blood pressure temporarily and they can be easily avoided.
